The Strathbogie Ranges stretch to the north of Bonnie Doon and house gold mines that span from an open pit in Strathbogie to the granite hill tops called Golden Hill; a Chinese mining settlement on the granite ridge-top, overlooking Mansfield.

Setting all the facet angles by eye rather than machine was painstaking work, with the cutting and polishing taking 200 hours over three and a half months. Later, during the 1940s and 1950s, several shafts were dug by a group of Melbourne miners to extract quartz crystal for use in electronics. This period was its heyday and tons of large crystals up to 160kg were obtained. The Crystal King Mine is located in the Strathbogie Granite Ranges.
